A lot of maintenance guides start with “use a soft cloth” and leave it at that. But the real question isn’t what to use—it’s how often, and with what technique, to avoid slowly wearing down the surface over time.
For WPC doors, the sweet spot for routine cleaning is once every seven to ten days in normal residential settings, and twice a week in commercial spaces with heavier foot traffic. A dry microfiber cloth does the job for everyday dust—static charge picks up particles without scratching. For a deeper clean, a solution of warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap (pH-neutral, nothing with citrus or bleach) works fine. The key is wringing the cloth out thoroughly before wiping—damp, not wet. Water pooling around edges or seeping into gaps around the frame is the one thing that can cause trouble over time, even with water-resistant materials.
One mistake that shows up repeatedly in field observations: using the same cloth for the whole door without rinsing it out. Dirt trapped in the fabric acts like fine sandpaper. Over a couple of years, that dulls the gloss and creates a hazy appearance that’s hard to reverse without refinishing.
Ink marks, adhesive residue, grease splatters—these are the ones that tempt people to reach for harsh solvents. And that’s exactly where most damage happens.
For greasy stains, a diluted degreaser or a bit of dish soap worked into the spot with a soft sponge usually does the trick. Ink or permanent marker responds well to rubbing alcohol applied sparingly on a cotton swab—but always test on an inconspicuous area first. A paste made from baking soda and water, left on for a few minutes, handles many stubborn spots without aggressive chemicals.
What absolutely should not go near a WPC door: acetone, lacquer thinner, bleach, or any abrasive scouring pad. These attack the polymer matrix or scratch the finish, and the damage is permanent. A project manager at a hospital renovation in southern China once shared that maintenance crews had been using industrial degreaser on WPC door surfaces in patient rooms. Within eighteen months, a noticeable dulling and micro-cracking appeared across more than two hundred doors—entirely preventable with the right cleaner.
The door surface gets all the attention. Hinges, locks, and handles—the moving parts—often get ignored until they start squeaking or sticking.
A few drops of silicone-based lubricant or light machine oil on hinges every three to four months keeps operation smooth. Avoid WD-40 as a long-term solution—it’s a solvent and degreaser, not a true lubricant, and it can attract dust over time. Check screws on hinges and handle plates periodically; loose hardware causes the door to sag, which creates uneven pressure on the frame and can lead to gaps or binding.
One practical tip: when lubricating, wipe away excess immediately. Dripping oil can stain the door surface or collect dust that works its way into the finish.
WPC doors handle moisture better than solid wood or MDF, but they’re not invincible. The material is engineered to resist water absorption, not to sit in standing water or constant high humidity.
Indoor humidity between 40% and 60% is the recommended range for most WPC door applications. In bathrooms or kitchens, proper ventilation makes a real difference—an exhaust fan running during and after showers cuts humidity spikes that can stress door edges and frames over time. For exterior-facing installations or doors in direct sunlight, UV exposure causes gradual color shift. A UV-protective coating or simple shading (an awning, a overhang) slows that process considerably.
A coastal residential project in Fujian province offered a clear lesson: doors installed in ocean-facing units without any UV or salt-spray protection showed visible fading and surface degradation after roughly four years, while identical doors on the building’s sheltered side remained in excellent condition. The difference wasn’t the product—it was the environment and the lack of preventive measures.
Once every season—or at minimum twice a year—set aside time for a more thorough check. Wipe down both sides of the door, including the top and bottom edges that rarely get cleaned. Inspect seals around the frame for cracks or compression; damaged seals let in moisture and reduce energy efficiency. Tighten any loose screws and check that the door closes evenly without rubbing against the frame.
This is also the time to address minor scratches. Superficial marks can often be buffed out with fine-grit sandpaper (220 to 400 grit) followed by a buffing compound. For deeper scratches, a color-matched wax filler stick works well—apply, let dry, sand lightly, and buff.
Sometimes cleaning uncovers problems that aren’t surface-level. Peeling along edges, consistent sticking even after hardware adjustment, or visible swelling at the bottom of the door—these point to moisture intrusion that routine care won’t fix. In those cases, the root cause is usually installation-related: inadequate clearance, poor sealing around the frame, or water tracking in from the floor.
Catching these early matters. A door that sticks slightly in summer humidity might be fine after a hardware tweak, but if it persists across seasons, it’s worth investigating the frame and subfloor conditions rather than assuming the door itself is failing.
